Author Haley ER Cooper’s portrait on the “Wall of Strange” at Strange Bird Immersive (Houston, TX)

Immersology studies the emerging genre of immersive theatre from the creator’s point of view. It offers theories, structures, design struggles, practicals, and other meta-level musings. Immersive theatre is a distinct genre of performative storytelling, as distinct as a play or a musical, and Immersology aims to inspire  creativity in this exciting new frontier.

Author Haley ER Cooper is co-artistic director of the multi-award-winning Strange Bird Immersive in Houston and an ardent fan of immersive theatre. Immersology chronicles Cooper’s insights from working on the front-lines of the genre, both as a creator and performer. Her articles also incorporate ideas derived from other immersive works experienced from the audience side. Both from within and without, Immersology moves towards a more sophisticated understanding of what’s possible when an audience plays an active role in the performance.

Cooper holds a BA in English and History from Rice University and an MA in Intellectual History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has abandoned the ivory tower for the immersive frontier and hopes stranger things may still happen.

Haley ER Cooper is available for consulting, writing, and experience design. Reach out if you have an interest in crafting a deep-diving immersive.
